Loving One Another (John 13:34-35)
Love one another: A renewed commandment
~The commandment was not really new. The commandment to love was already known to the Jews. (Lev. 19:18)~Why renewed? The renewed commandment here has an additional part, "as I have loved you." Not only will the discipline love others as himself, but also as the Lord loved us.
~We love our neighbors as we love ourselves but we love the brethren in the manner that the Lord loved us.
Love one another: The proof of discipleship
~The greatest test of discipleship is how we love one another.~Let us not confuse edification with the pain of correction. When we edify (Eph. 4:29), we build up their faith the very moment we speak. When we rebuke and correct (Heb. 12:10-11), we hurt them for a meantime but help them have the fruit of righteousness.
